I would like to wish everyone a Prosperous, Healthy, Happy New Year!
and thank you for our best year ever. We enjoyed many wonderful
moments in 2009 and are looking forward to more great times in 2010.
Our year started at the Green Reel Environmental Film Festival with
the premiere of our documentary: Squirm, The Story of Cathy’s Crawly
Composters. The theatre was filled with busloads of children who had
attended one of our worm composting workshops. Half way through the
movie Rick whispered in my ear "Look around, we have a theatre full
of kids and no one is squirming around and no one is making any noise”.
They
were intently focused on the screen. I think this is a credit to our
incredible filmmaker, Darcy Hoover, who produced an incredibly captivating
movie.
In January, Dan Ruby of The York Region Small Business Enterprise Centre approached fellow green entrepreneur Renee Blake and me about an idea for a green business network group. From this meeting, Green Connections was born. Green Connections is now a thriving group of Green businesses that are intent on making the world a more sustainable place to live and thrive. Watch a different Green Connections member on Daytime York Region with Jacqueline Betterton and Jeff Moore every other Wednesday (10 am).
This year has provided many opportunities to share my passion for worm
composting, and living life. I have had the opportunity to speak to
some very diverse groups. From the Council of Canadians to the Youth
Environmental Network of York Region, the worm word was spread far and
wide. I also had the privilege to present at the CAFE convention in
Charlottetown, PEI. School workshops and worm workshops are still my
favourite activity.
"Every day we make decisions and choices, big and small,
which make ‘ripples’."
The Women’s Centre of York Region hosted The Ripple Effect. A forum
that examined the impact of our ripples on our community and globally.
This event provided a wonderful opportunity to look at the environmental
ripples we create. As a bonus I got the chance to meet the awesome
Craig Kielburger, co-founder of Free the Children and Me to We.
Craig's story is an inspiration to us all and it was an honour to
meet him.
I am excited and looking forward to see what adventures this year brings.
Please enjoy our latest worm away newsletter. Thank you for being a part of our worm world. Have a great 2010!
In gratitude,
Cathy
