World Soil Day:
Dec. 5, 2020
Plants nurture a whole world of
creatures in the soil, that in return feed and protect the
plants. This diverse community of living organisms keeps the
soil healthy and fertile. This vast world constitutes soil
biodiversity and determines the main biogeochemical processes
that make life possible on Earth.

Add your event to the UN Soil Day event map.
This year, by addressing the increasing
challenges of soil management, the Food and Agriculture Organization
(FAO) campaign "Keep soil alive, protect soil biodiversity"
aims to raise awareness of the importance of sustaining healthy
ecosystems and human well-being. By encouraging people around
the world to engage in proactively improving soil health,
the campaign also aims to fight soil biodiversity loss.

Red Wigglers make some of the best soil on the planet.
If we do not act soon, the fertility
of soil will continue to be adversely affected at an alarming
rate, threatening global food supplies and food safety.
Check out the UN Soil Day FAQ page
to find out interesting facts and info on how to get involved. |

The Compost Council of Canada
Saturday December 5th is a global day of celebration
- World Soil Day 2020. This year's theme is all about us,
and the purpose of our work: Keep soil alive, protect soil
biodiversity.
It is the organic matter that is created from
the organics that we recycle that is the important food source
for the critters of the soil. So, a day to celebrate - please
find below some of the "party favours" that will
help with celebration.

Are you up for a Challenge,
A food waste Challenge?
Impact
Canada hopes that you are.

One third of all food produced globally for human
consumption goes to waste. This food accounts for about one
quarter of all water used by the agriculture sector each year,
requires land area greater than the size of China, and generates
around 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions annually. Approximately
31% of Canada’s food supply is wasted annually,
costing an estimated $49.5 billion. Meanwhile, 1 in 7 Canadians
suffer from food insecurity.
Food Waste accounts for
about one quarter of all water used by the agriculture sector
The economic, social and environmental footprint
of food waste is too large to ignore. That is why the Government
of Canada is launching the Food Waste Reduction Challenge,
under the Food Policy for Canada, an initiative which serves
as a roadmap for a healthier and more sustainable food system
for Canada.
The challenge aims to support new innovations
and solutions which can help address the problem of food waste
and loss across the supply chain.

The Food Waste Reduction Challenge is composed
of four different streams:
- A: Business Models that Prevent Food Waste
- B: Business Models that Divert Food Waste
- C: Technologies that Extend the Life of Food
- D: Technologies that Transform Food Waste
Eligible applicants include
the following:
1. Businesses or other for-profit organizations incorporated
in Canada
2. Not-for-profit organizations incorporated in Canada
3. Indigenous organizations and groups located in Canada
4. Post-secondary/academic institutions located in Canada
5. Individuals or groups of individuals based in Canada
6. Non-Canadian individuals and entities |
Up to $10.8 million in total will

"Forgive your enemies;
it messes up their heads." |
What do
you do when the whole world closes down but you still
need to get the word out? Who do you call when world
changing events make face to face contact impossible.
If there was only a technology available that would
let someone conduct an in-depth interview and then spread
that message across the lands. There is you say?
Podcasts and Video(zoom) calls are shaping
our new reality. The tools we use to communicate have
changed overnight. Last year Cathy's Crawly Composted
particiated in over 50 community & school events
throughout the year. In 2020 BC there was 5. So to keep
our worms in the soil, instead of going to speaking
events we are sending the events to you. So far Cathy
has been invited to participate in over 14 Podcasts.

- Compostable vs. biodegradable: definitely
not one and the same
The term compostable, on the other hand, refers to
the natural process by which the earth and its many
little helpers break down plant materials (and some
animal products) into a very beneficial material.
For more information on this, I spoke to Cathy Nesbitt,
owner of Cathy’s Composters, to get the real 'dirt'
on the subject.

The Christmas Tree Worm
 |
The Christmas Tree Worm (Spirobranchus
giganteus) is commonly found in tropical coral reefs.
These appropriately named worms usually bore a hole
into a coral head and then secrete a fluid that hardens
around the body, forming its home.
The two tree-like structures are actually specialized
mouth appendages. A kind of tongue that waves in the
currents collecting small microbial prey for food. |
