Re: Hello Cathy
I was delighted to find someone like you who is obviously so sincere
in promoting and using vermiculture. There are not too many genuine
'greenies' like you around any more.

Did you Know?
- In a healthy acre of land there can be more than a million
worms. There are more than 5,000 different species of
worms on this planet. Which one is right for you.
- What happens to the worms outside during a Canadian
winter?
Most earthworms, like the Nightcrawler, go down
into burrows up to six feet down. This takes them below the frost
line where they snuggle away the winter months in relative comfort.
The Red Wiggler (the type we use for composting)
is a surface dweller. It rarely travels more than a few inches
below the surface. If the worms are in an active composter there
can be a enough heat from the composting process to keep them
from freezing. The worm eggs (or cocoons) can last over the winter
freeze. In fact the eggs will not hatch until conditions become
favourable.

City of Barrie Corporate Facilities
The City
of Barrie is developing a reputation of being
one of the most environmentally responsible municipalities
in Ontario. Corporate Facilities supervisor Glenn Tristram
has become a great advocate of the worms. Here is a brief
summary of the efforts Barrie's Corporate Facilities department
has made to keep their workplace environmentally sustainable. |
We have currently diverted 160 lbs of food waste from City
Hall. We are going to expand to a 4th Chalet shortly. We have
2 of the house hold green bins that we collect the food scraps
in. My goal is to have one on every floor. Another goal for
the year is to continue to improve our recycling system. I
am going to establish some diversion numbers so we can track our success.
Additional locations for worms: We will be starting a Chalet
at the Library in February. Murray will coach the Custodians
there on how to care for the worms. Our success at City Hall
has led us to investigate how far we can expand this project;
the
new library will have one and I am looking to place one at
Police Headquarters. I also am looking at how I can incorporate
a program at the new Surface Water Treatment plant that opens
in June of 2010. So hopefully we continue to grow and do our
part. The effort to make the worm program a success is minimal.
They aren't labour intensive.
