Re: Thank you very much Cathy!

I cannot begin to tell you how wonderful today was for the kids but especially for me! You captured a true basic need at our school. I am truly grateful! I emailed Roberta right after the presentation and thanked her for sending your link to us! The boys fed the worms right away ... coffee grinds, apple core, lettuce (no dressing), and orange peels.

Rest assured that the worms have found a home and they will be well taken care.

Sincerely,
Fiorella

  • Think outside the blue box - How worms may just be a secret weapon in the war on garbage.
Hundreds of red wiggler worms are hard at work inside a small plastic bin that’s tucked into the corner of a Toronto kitchen. Each day, these worms eat half their weight in kitchen scraps such as vegetables, eggshells, and coffee grounds.

On January 13th Cathy’s Crawly Composters demonstrated to the students at Kate S. Durdan the ever increasing role these worms have in waste management and soil production. Did you Know?

  • Worms do not have eyes or ears, but they have light-sensitive cells and can tell the difference between light and dark.

  • Worm bodies are very sensitive to movement and vibrations. It is hard to sneak up on a worm. Worms usually know when people are near simply by the vibrations they make by walking.

  • Red Wigglers are great for eating your compost but it is the Nightcrawler that will help aerate your garden. Red Wigglers are surface dwellers, only going between 6" - 12" deep, whereas Nightcrawlers take their food down into their burrows 4 - 6 feet underground.
