Zombie Worms
Traces of bone-eating "zombie worms"
have been found in a three-million-year-old fossil from Italy, say
researchers. |

|
"Fossils of worms are really rare. We don't know a lot about their fossil record because they're soft animals,"

How fast do worms reproduce?
Worms have an incredible reproductive rate. So one
of the most common questions we get at workshops is "How many
worms can one worm produce in one year". |

In answer to this question Cathy gives the following
formula and asks the students to work out the answer. To date we
have never received a response, until now ...
Formula:
There are an average of 5 worms per cocoon, it takes 3 weeks to hatch, 10 weeks to maturity and then the worms produce a new cocoon every 7 - 10 days. |
| If you start with 500 mature worms (1/2 lb.) and
there is a 0% mortality rate and every worm mates every 7 days and
there is 5 worms in each egg and eggs take 3 weeks to hatch and
worms take 10 weeks to mature after a year there would be 19,360,538
mature worms and 256,277,958 immature worms or worms in eggs for
a total of 275,638,496 worms in total.

Thanks Benjamin, now we know. |
| What do worms leave round their
baths?
The scum of the earth.

| Hi Cathy,
First of all, on behalf of all the students, I wanted to thank you for the DVD. We received it in the Thursday p.m. mail.
The DVD began circulating each class on Friday and we are playing clips on the school TV screen that students watch as they come in from the recess yard. It will be great for our Grade 3s as they work through their science unit.
We are all waiting with baited breath to see if one of our worm names makes it to the "best of the best" list - 2 of the Grade 5 students are working on making vote slips for every student - and I know the Grade 2s are waiting to see the name votes so they can create a bar graph in mathematics.
You have truly opened the doors to real-life learning.
Thank you so much,
Jay

"The ClimateSpark Social Venture Challenge is looking
for ten great ideas that can help our city and our climate. The
three-part challenge is open to any social venture that includes
at least one non-profit partner and that can demonstrate a financially
viable solution to reducing Toronto’s climate impact. "
Cathy's
Crawly Composters has accepted the challenge. A Vermicomposting
proposal was submitted to Climate Spark. The submission, entitled
"Vermicomposting Toronto" (see details here)
is a plan to install environmentally sustainable insulated vermicomposting
systems for processing pre-consumer organic waste produced in community
organizations.
Although
the proposal, which was based on the highly successful Surrey Place
Vermicomposting project, was submitted quite late in the process,
we have received a great amount of interest and support. A lot of
the comments suggest that it is high-time the worms made their presence
known in Toronto!
"Thanks for the exciting finish to Round 1. Contestants
chosen to proceed to Round 2 will be announced at 9 a.m. on Nov.
1st."
Round 2 will end Nov. 15. At that time Round 2 winners (10 contestants)
will be announced. Please visit www.climatespark.ca
to check on the progress of the "Vermicomposting Toronto"
entry and thank you to everyone for their input and support.
|
Update: Our Vermicomposting Toronto bid has
made it into the second round. Yeah!!!
Please take a moment to visit

2011 Back
to School Contest*
Part II
| Help us name
our new friend and win a Vermicomposter for your classroom.
Once again we have had an overwhelming response to
our Back to School Contest. The imaginative,
creative and down right funny suggestions we received
made the selection process extremely difficult.
However, after weeks of careful study and debate, we
have managed to whittle the names down to our favourite
five.
The Final Five:
- Roots the Worm
- Wiggly Wanda
- Mr. Wormypants
- Chomp
- Squirmy Wormy
Now we need your help once more. Help us
select the name you think would be the best for our
new mascot. Follow
this link to submit your vote and name the worm.
Voting closes November 21, 2011. The
winning name will be announced on the
Cathy's Crawly
Composters facebook
page. |

The Contest:
Part I
Submit names for our new mascot.
Part II
Vote on your favourite name.
Part III
Tally the winning votes and announce the new name.
* Part I - Open to
all Canadian Public and Private Schools.
Part II - Vote open to everyone.

(This month's "Did you Know?"
courtesy of Planet Echo.)
Did you Know?
- Did you know in order to have good soil and
to grow good food, you need happy and healthy worms to set
up their homes there?
- Do you know how worms make humus?
- Did you know worms layed eggs?
All these questions and more will be answered by Chuck and
Andy at Planet Echo.
Last summer the team from APTN's Planet Echo visited the
worm farm. This video shows how learning about worms can be
fun.

Follow this link to Planet Echo episode.
Note: The answer to question #1 in the
quiz is actually 4,000 - 6,000 not 46 ,000. (You will understand when you get there). |

Vegan Food Delivery Service, serving all of York Region, Toronto
and the GTA. Our juices are 100% organic and freshly-pressed,

are delivered in compostable non-toxic packaging.
We promote a balanced, healthy and sustainable lifestyle that is in alignment with each of our highest potentials and truest selves. Honouring and nourishing your body with whole foods, organic, local produce and giving it loving attention is a marvelous long-term strategy for staying healthy. Especially when combined with the balance of mind and spirit that comes from expressing yourself, living your passion and listening to your heart.
Our guiding principle is to offer our service with love, joy and gratitude, holding intentions for the highest good of all. We are committed to being an authentic presence in our communities, to giving back and to supporting those around us. For this reason Sprouting Goodness donates 10% of all profits back into the community in the form of cancer coaching sponsorship, juice cleanse sponsorships and subsidized naturopathic and nutritional consultations.
It
was Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, that said
“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” and yet
sadly many of our medical doctors receive less than 20 hours
of nutritional instruction throughout their entire education.
As more and more research is done it has become exceedingly
clear that what we eat and drink is absolutely foundational
to our health and well-being. This is why at Sprouting Goodness
it is our priority to provide you with the highest quality
products possible. We are committed to using only 100% organic
ingredients in all of our juices and raw foods and add no
preservatives or additives of any kind. We know how fundamental
healthy food is and we want to support you in your wellness
and in your healing.
