Worms in Space
Toronto High School Students Involved
in Experiment That Sent Worms to ISS
Four high school students undertook a class project and sent
a science experiment involving worms to the International
The experiment was a study on effects of gravity (or lack
of) on a specific enzyme related to muscular atrophy. An ALS-linked
enzyme was expected to increase when introduced to micro gravity.
Annabel Gravely, who's grandfather died of ALS, drew a connection
between the disease and the muscle loss astronauts suffer
after spending extended periods in space, where they become
weaker because their bodies aren’t working against gravity.
The twist in the study came when they realized the findings
were completely opposite to what they expected. The enzyme
in the "Space
Worms" was actually lower than the control
group that stayed earthbound.
Their experiment’s unexpected findings were featured
in the peer-reviewed academic journal “Gravitational

Thank you for your inspirational, interactive

All K-8 students from Halton Waldorf School
had the opportunity to attend one of Cathy's amazing
workshops. She engaged the children right away with
her message, props and hands-on activities. We all learned
how red wiggler worms turn food waste into nutrient
rich soil. These worm castings, a nice name for poop,
make wonderful compost for plants & gardens. The major
highlight of course was getting to hold the worms.
Cathy has a passion for teaching sustainability as she
captivated the children of all ages, even the adults!
I highly recommend her informative, lively & humorous
presentations,as every school should have vermicomposters.

Reduction Week in Canada is a year-round program, focused
solely on the principles of circular economy, resource
efficiency, and waste reduction. The program’s
primary purpose is to celebrate our environmental efforts
and achievements while encouraging new innovative ideas
and solutions. The celebratory nature of the campaign
is how it motivates learning and behavior change.
program’s educational resources and “take
action” messaging empower all Canadians to adopt
more environmentally conscious choices. Waste Reduction
Week in Canada further provides information and ideas
to reduce waste in all facets of daily living, creating
the solutions to the many environmental challenges we
face including climate change, water pollution and preservation
of natural resources.
Waste Reduction and Recycling Weeks in Canada started
in the mid-1980s, when a number of recycling councils
and environmental organizations began holding provincial
events. In 2001, the national Waste Reduction Week program
was formalized by Recycling Council of Ontario who now
leads the national campaign with support from a coalition
of not-for-profit environmental groups and governments
from each of the 13 provincial and territorial jurisdictions
across Canada. (source: wrwcanada.com)
