Organic Magic with Worms
Vermicomposting, or worm composting, is an excellent way to convert
household garbage into nutrient rich fertilizer. Cathy, from Cathy’s
Crawly Composters, visited students at St. Alfred’s Catholic
School on Tuesday, February 28th, to explain how composting with
specialty worms, known as Red Wigglers, is a clean and environmentally
friendly way to save tonnes of waste from going to landfill. Cathy
and the children made up a worm bed using a container with air
holes, a mixture of shredded paper products, a liter of soil with
micro-organisms, some egg shells or lime, about 1.5 liters of
water and a pound of worms, which is somewhere between 800 and
1000 Red Wigglers. The kids gave some of the worms, names before
adding them to the worm bed, shrieking all the while. The worms
will eat half their weight of scraps each day, or 3 to 4 pounds
of scraps per week.
