The Recycling Council of Ontario announced the winners of the 2005 Ontario Waste Minimization Awards, Oct. 20 in Stratford, Ontario, highlighting - National Waste Reduction Week, Oct. 17-23.
Among this year's winners were the City of Barrie for its "One Less Plastic Bag" campaign, York Region Solid Waste management for its Yard Waste program - and Bradford resident Cathy Nesbitt, for Cathy's Crawly Composters.
Nesbitt won the Individual Recognition Award (Adult), for her commitment to reducing the amount of organic waste ending up in landfills across Ontario - encouraging schools, industry, commerce and individuals to explore vermicomposting and the use of "red wiggler" worms to transform organic waste into compost.
Setting out a pumpkin for Halloween? Nesbitt asks residents bring their Halloween pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns to 43 Thornton Ave. in Bradford, and place them in the container provided by the hedge. "Red Wigglers love pumpkins - it's their Halloween treat," she says.
