Community partners in vermicomposting - Cathy Nesbitt, and Country Style Donuts' Rehmat Khan.
Partners in Composting
A few weeks back, Cathy Nesbitt was looking for community partners - coffee shops or grocery stores - that could provide her with organic garbage.
Nesbitt is not a garbologist; she was simply hoping to secure a reliable food supply for her Red Wiggler worms, and her new vermicomposting business. "Cathy's Crawly Composters" sells complete vermicomposting kits - including container with tight fitting lid, 1 lb. of worms, bedding, and step-by-step instructions for transforming organic household garbage into black castings and compost tea, a gardener's delight.
Nesbitt has found her first community partner. Country Style Donuts at 28 Bridge St. has agreed to give Nesbitt all of the coffee grounds and filters that normally would end up in the dumpster, hundred of pounds of organic waste per week. The Red Wigglers thrive on the grounds and filters - and says Nesbitt, "We just placed an order for 50 lbs. of worms. We need to expand!"
She's happy, the staff at Country Style are happy - they no longer have to trundle messy grounds and filters out to the trash - and store owner, Rehmat Khan, is happy to be involved in a project that is good for the environment.
